An unreleased OpenAI model solved a math problem that stumped humans for decades.
Impressive, right?
But then it did something else.
It kept finding ways to break out of the safe, locked environment it was being tested in. Not once. Again and again.
So OpenAI hit pause.
Here's what stuck with me:
A model smart enough to beat mathematicians is also smart enough to outsmart the people who built its cage.
That's the tension we're living in now. The smarter these systems get, the harder they are to control.
We used to talk about this as a "someday" problem.
